Jones Quarry State Superfund Site

The site is a former limestone quarry in which paint sludges and waste were deposited. It is regulated under the Tennessee Division of Remediation’s Voluntary Oversight and Assistance Program (VOAP). TriAD performed a remedial investigation and feasibility study, including a risk assessment. The investigation confirmed groundwater contamination within the karst aquifer, but found no significant risk to local groundwater users. The selected remedial alternative consists of an in-situ bioremediation system using recirculated site groundwater.

The following activities were performed during the Remedial Investigation:

  • Hydrogeologic inventory of site and surrounding area
  • Semi-quantitative dye trace using spring, surface water, and residential well dye receptor points
  • Groundwater sampling at residential water wells, monitoring wells, and spring
  • Waste characterization study using test pits and “worst case” waste samples
  • Using pressure transducer, water-level recorders and recording rain gauge to evaluate rainfall effects on groundwater flow
  • Borings through waste to determine contours of the quarry floor
  • Preparation of risk assessment to determine potential receptors and migration pathways
