TriAD provided construction quality assurance (CQA) monitoring during excavation of sediment impacted by polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The sediment was removed from a 607-foot section of Sweetwater Creek. Approvals to conduct the work were obtained from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, Divisions of Solid Waste Management and Water Pollution Control. TriAD provided continuous observation and documentation throughout the excavation activities. Berms were installed up- and downgradient in the creek and the creek was dewatered by pumping to bypass the excavation area. The PAH-impacted sediment was removed from the creek bed by backhoe and the Guzzler Vacuum System, with immiscible fluids removed via absorbent material. 518 tons of PAH-impacted sediment and 1,020 pounds of absorbent material were removed and transported as special waste to a Class I landfill.
